Worried about competitors? Here are five ways to stand out

According to PPAI’s quarterly report, 46.2% of distributors feel threatened by competitors. Competitors are good when they drive us to be the best we can be, but when they threaten to derail your business plan, it’s time to face the issue head on.

1. Find your unique selling point.

Make sure all of your marketing efforts (emails, website, social media) are centered around what makes you unique – in this industry, it’s not what you sell, it’s how you sell it!

2. Focus on a niche.

People like to buy from specialists. So if you do a lot of work in the education sector, make sure that at the very least you have a page on your website which addresses that industry, and market to them based on your specialist knowledge of that area.

3. Ask for testimonials.

It’s all very well you saying you deliver exceptional customer service, but if your customers have publicly declared the same, it has much more authority. Don’t be afraid to ask your customers for a quick testimonial, and do add it to your website!

4. Don’t compete on price.

Unless you’re 4imprint or Staples, you’re not going to win this one. Instead double your value proposition – offer free rush orders, additional methods of payment, 10% extra free, free samples, free artwork re-draws, free consultancy, satisfaction guarantees etc.

5. Stop wasting time on non-profitable clients.

We’ve all been there – bending over backwards to source obscure products, provide samples, quote, re-quote, and quote again, all in the hope that one day this client will reward your effort. Stop it. Reinvest that energy in clients who’ve already purchased from you, and win their loyalty rather than expending energies on time-wasters.
